金草莓 Lyrics Video

This is a song written by one of Hong Kong’s most prominent lyricists, Wyman Wong. The idea behind this song is that everything has its own value and beauty, but not everyone sees it. Wyman wishes people could avoid looking at things through a judging lens and try to appreciate the inner beauty that things possess.

With Wyman’s message in mind, my plan was to showcase a number of places and things that deserve attention before they sadly fade away. I set Sham Shui Po, one of Hong Kong’s oldest neighbourhoods, as the main scene. And I gathered shots of the rice shop, Shanghai-style barbershop, wet market, vintage watch repair shop and vinyl records. I wanted to use these local and traditional cultural elements to create a nostalgic mood; and ultimately, I hoped to remind people of the value and beauty in our disappearing cultural experiences.

How do we determine a person's worth? Jason Chan's new single "Golden Strawberry" uses discounted goods in supermarkets to talk about situations we all may encounter.

Lyricist Wyman Wong made an observation while wandering through a market. He said, "In supermarkets, we often see products that are still of good quality but are discounted because the store is about to close. The prices drop even further as closing time approaches. This reminded me of people who, despite having excellent qualities, are undervalued."

Wyman had thought about using this metaphor of discounted goods in supermarkets for a while, but never had the chance to use it. When he encountered Patrick Tse's melody, Wyman finally felt that this idea could be put to good use. "The concept of discounted goods paired with Patrick Tse's sophisticated-sounding melody makes for an interesting combination." Thus, the neglected discounted goods became the star of "Golden Strawberry," leading to the creation of the song.

"Golden Strawberry" reminds us of many people and things with great qualities that are unjustly overlooked. These could be individuals who face setbacks in love, unnoticed security guards, small eateries, or items left in second-hand stores awaiting resale. Although they have admirable qualities, they end up like delicious dried strawberries, no longer fresh.

To promote the song, Jason even visited Sham Shui Po to shoot a reversed version of the lyrics MV for "Golden Strawberry," capturing the small characters in the community. This made the lyrics of "Golden Strawberry" more vivid through imagery. This is also Jason's first reversed lyrics MV, which will be released simultaneously on Jason's YouTube and social media pages.

Video Concept

As the lyricist mentioned, "Golden Strawberry" reminds us of many people and things with great qualities that are unjustly overlooked. We should pay more attention to those abandoned or forgotten items. Sham Shui Po in Hong Kong is filled with second-hand markets and flea markets, where many treasures await discovery, such as second-hand cameras, watches, vinyl records, and turntables. These are items we once cherished but later discarded, which can still be found there.

Therefore, I decided to shoot in this location, utilizing its unique features to integrate into the song, achieving the desired effect.

When we discussed the video release with the record company, they decided to experiment with releasing the video vertically, making it more accessible for viewers using mobile phones. As a result, only the creators will have the horizontal version.
